If you are a student, you can buy Adobe Lightroom 3 (which you will need to manage your images in any case) for under $ 90 in your student store or on-line from an education software company You will be able to tether your Canon from it

Buy some books on photography technique - the technical and the compositional side of things.
Look at good photographers work and try and figure out how they took the shots.
and
Practise, Practise, practise.

All you need is a camera, and some sort of instruction either from a teacher or a book. No matter photography isn't about editing or about how good your camera is. It's about you and how you visualize the world. Don't turn to places like photobucket for inspiration, go back and look at some of the masters of photography, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Yousef Karsh! etc. Here are the masters: http://www.masters-of-fine-art-photography.com/02/artphotogallery/home.html

I've been teaching most aspects of photography for over 30 years so I have a good idea of who has potential to reach a "professional" level of art. One can always develop the particulars on how to use a camera such a focus, metering, etc. but and I say but one has to have an "eye" first and foremost. Without a talent prompting growth, there is only the tech. stuff when is irrelevant and only numbers NOT art. You have the artistic temperament so go with you feelings and catch up on the technical stuff along the way. Shoot because you love not because how people till you to shoot.

I really wish the morons who say "awesome", "they are great", "your talented" etc etc would stay away from here.

Can one of the "gushers" please explain what is "awesome" about this picture for instance http://s765.photobucket.com/albums/xx297/lav_ish/?action=view&current=water.jpg

To the question.....

I really would like to know what it is about teens which makes them take pictures of totally random things which are uninteresting on their own and think it makes for a good photograph.

Your images are average. They are the same as everyone from about 10-18 seems to take.
Many of them have focus problems and most have compositional problems.

You need to learn the basics of photography, look at some proper photography/photographers sites and learn and practise.

Edit : if you do not know what the basics of photography are then what is the point of asking for critiques of your "photography".
All you have are snapshots.
Photography is a lot more involved than just owning a camera and snapping away at anything which takes your fancy.
Please do yourself (and others) a big favour and invest in a book on basic photography to actually learn a little about the subject that you are taking an interest in.

It is great that you are taking an interest in the subject, but you need to learn about it as well.
It is like anything else.
You would not jump in the deep end of a pool if you could not swim nor try and climb Everest if you had never tried mountaineering would you?
