Q&A: Are my pictures any good?

Question by Jess: Are my pictures any good?
Please critique my “photography” :)
I am 16 years old and have just taken an interest in it. I have a compact digital camera, which is what all of these were taken with, but I’m saving up for an SLR.
Thanks!

Bob, I don’t know what focus and composition is much less what makes mine problematic. I think teenagers take pictures of things that they would otherwise be uninterested in because they enjoy seeing them in the different light that a camera offers, same as many adults. I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy my pictures as much as I do. I hope to someday have a portfolio that will impress even the best. Thanks everybody!

In a word, ABSOLUTELY! You have a great eye. I think you have a great future ahead of you as a photographer. Keep with it!

  2. Samantha says:

Those are really good! I think you have a lot of potential in becoming a professional photographer. By me looking at the pictures I think you could have a job of taking pictures of nature and putting them on you know computers for like screen savers. That’s what your photos look like to me! Have fun with your career as a photographer!!! XD

  4. Toilets says:

    you are extremely talented.

  5. Bob says:

I really wish the morons who say “awesome”, “they are great”, “your talented” etc etc would stay away from here.

Can one of the “gushers” please explain what is “awesome” about this picture for instance http://s765.photobucket.com/albums/xx297/lav_ish/?action=view&current=water.jpg

    To the question…..

I really would like to know what it is about teens which makes them take pictures of totally random things which are uninteresting on their own and think it makes for a good photograph.

Your images are average. They are the same as everyone from about 10-18 seems to take.
Many of them have focus problems and most have compositional problems.

You need to learn the basics of photography, look at some proper photography/photographers sites and learn and practise.

Edit : if you do not know what the basics of photography are then what is the point of asking for critiques of your “photography”.
    All you have are snapshots.
Photography is a lot more involved than just owning a camera and snapping away at anything which takes your fancy.
Please do yourself (and others) a big favour and invest in a book on basic photography to actually learn a little about the subject that you are taking an interest in.

It is great that you are taking an interest in the subject, but you need to learn about it as well.
    It is like anything else.
You would not jump in the deep end of a pool if you could not swim nor try and climb Everest if you had never tried mountaineering would you?

i think they are very beautiful. otherwise everyday things, you made them look artistic and creative. go you^.^

I’ve been teaching most aspects of photography for over 30 years so I have a good idea of who has potential to reach a “professional” level of art. One can always develop the particulars on how to use a camera such a focus, metering, etc. but and I say but one has to have an “eye” first and foremost. Without a talent prompting growth, there is only the tech. stuff when is irrelevant and only numbers NOT art. You have the artistic temperament so go with you feelings and catch up on the technical stuff along the way. Shoot because you love not because how people till you to shoot.
